Police Log: Motorist with Loaded Gun Nabbed at Traffic Stop; No Injuries in Saturday Shooting

A Hayward man, 20, was arrested last week during a late-night routine traffic stop for reportedly having an illegal loaded gun concealed in his vehicle, according to the San Leandro Police Department.
 
Benjamin Lal was arrested Monday at 11:40 p.m. on Alvarado and Williams streets for suspected possession of the illegal firearm and transported to jail, police said.

Lt. Randall Brandt stated, “Our staff is committed to maintaining public safety. We have recovered nearly 75 illegal guns so far this year and we will not stop until people realize it is unacceptable to possess illegal weapons in our city.”

In other news, an alleged car thief driving his freshly stolen vehicle was busted passing through San Leandro on his way home to Oakland.

A Chevy Trailblazer was reported stolen Wednesday at 2:30 a.m. from a Fremont home whose resident said he woke to a “clicking sound” and the loud sound of his exhaust system and engine, according to the Fremont Police Department.

 Through a window, he saw his vehicle being driven away towards Nicolet Avenue. Within minutes, Fremont officers located the vehicle on northbound I-880 and, once additional officers caught up, stopped the car and its driver -- a 20-year-old Oakland man, who was compliant -- at Marina Boulevard in San Leandro, police said.  

The subject was arrested for suspected auto theft. A Chevy key was in the now-damaged ignition. The suspect told officers he came to Fremont to steal vehicles ... and was going "back home" where he "would get paid" for them.
