Two Suspects Arrested After Carjacking

A police pursuit followed the carjacking. The suspects eventually crashed into a ravine and attempted to run off.

Two suspects were arrested after carjacking a vehicle from a father and daughter on Tuesday eveing, Police said.

Around 5:30 p.m., a man and his daughter were sitting in their vehicle near Castro Street and San Leandro Boulevard, when they were approached by the suspects, according to SLPD in a crime report.

The suspects showed the victims what appeared to be handguns and ordered the man out of the car, according to police. Fearing for his and his daughter’s lives, the man grabbed his daughter and complied.

The suspects took off with the car, traveling northbound on San Leandro Boulevard.

Around 5:38 p.m., members of SLPD's Crime Suppression Unit were in East Oakland looking for the vehicle, when one of them located it in the area of 109th Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard in Oakland, SLPD reported.

As other SLPD units arrived at the scene, they attempted to stop the vehicle, but it fled westbound onto I-580. A short pursuit ensued, ending when the vehicle exited at the 98th Avenue and Golf Links Road and crashed into a ravine just off the freeway, SLPD reported.

Both subjects ran towards Mountain Boulevard where the driver was taken into custody by SLPD. Patrol and Crime Suppression Officers conducted a nearly two-hour search for the second suspect and finally located him in the 3500 block of Calafia Avenue in Oakland, SLPD reported.

SLPD said they located a loaded handgun and a replica handgun in the vehicle.

Both suspects are juveniles and one was treated for a leg injury from when he was trying to jumping a fence. The victims did not sustain any physical injuries as a result of the incident, SLPD reported.

“The victim did the right thing by complying with the suspects demands," Lt. Luis Torres said. "This is the second month we’ve had our Crime Suppression Unit assisting patrol out on the streets. It is yet another example how the shifting of our resources has had a direct impact in locating and arresting violent individuals who commit crimes in San Leandro.”
