SLPD Shifts Staffing to Specialized Unit to Address Crime

The San Leandro Police Department merged together a new team of officers to address emerging crime trends and problem areas identified through Crime Analysis.

From San Leandro Police Department

The San Leandro Police Department merged together a new team of officers to provide the Department with the ability to quickly address emerging crime trends and problem areas identified through Crime Analysis.

The Crime Suppression Unit will have a Lieutenant and two supervisors to manage and supervise the team of officers. This team will allow the Department to direct resources to a specific problem without continually diverting Patrol officers from responding to calls for service.

The overriding philosophy of the Crime Suppression Unit is a proactive, no-tolerance approach to crime which can be deterred from occurring through highly proactive and directed enforcement following creative problem oriented policing strategies.

The Crime Suppression Unit will work in partnership with both internal and external stakeholders to educate members of the Department, City Employees and the community regarding crime trends and problems.

They will also utilize available resources in its efforts to educate to include social media, news/print media, educational pamphlets and community meetings to assist with the mission of deterring crime and improving the quality of life for the San Leandro community.

The Crime Suppression Unit will utilize a variety of marked and unmarked vehicles, bicycle patrol, foot patrol and undercover operations depending on the problem they are addressing.

The main priorities of the Unit will include violent crime suppression; problem oriented policing projects, burglary suppression, warrant service, probation and parole audits, and community outreach.

Crime Analysis will be providing daily criminal informational data to the Unit so that staff can deploy resources or create operations so that we can effectively and efficiently deal with specific community problem.

The Unit will also work closely with the Alameda County District Attorney's Office, Municipal, Federal and State Law Enforcement Agencies, Probation Department and the Department of Corrections to enhance its efforts to reduce crime in the City of San Leandro.

They will utilize a process of organized problem solving tactics that, when coupled with commitment and consistency, will lead to the positive outcome of recurring incremental reductions in crime.

"With our limited resources and emerging crime trends, it is a priority to dedicate resources to special enforcement," said Captain Ed Tracey. "Their approach will be focused and balanced between education, prevention and enforcement. Keeping a safe environment for our community to live, work and play in is our daily goal at SLPD."
