A motorcyclist who was killed in a crash on Interstate Highway 580 on Friday has been identified by the Alameda County coroner's bureau as 45-year-old Kimberly Kempton, of San Leandro.

Kempton was riding her motorcycle west on Highway 580 near the Hacienda Drive exit at 12:54 p.m. when she struck a piece of wood lying in the roadway, California Highway Patrol Officer Steve Creel said.

She was ejected from her bike and landed on the roadway, Creel said.

A box truck hit Kempton and dragged her before it came to a stop west of Hacienda, Creel said.

The coroner's bureau was called to the scene shortly after 1:30 p.m., CHP officer James Evans said.

According to LinkedIn, Kempton was a senior tax counsel at Chevron in San Ramon.

Charles Kinney, who met Kempton when they were both instructors at a UC Berkeley program intended to teach research scientists scuba diving, said she was a “great person and a great motorcycle rider.”

Kinney, who also rides a motorcycle, said that the amount of debris on roads poses a danger to motorcyclists and motorists alike.

“There just needs to be a better way to keep stuff off the freeway,” Kinney said.
