Officials ID 18-Year-Old Wearing Headphones Who Was Struck, Killed By Train in San Leandro

Witnesses told police Brittney Silva of San Leandro was wearing earbuds when she was hit.

An 18-year-old woman who was wearing headphones was killed Monday night when she was struck by an Amtrak train in the vicinity of Hesperian Boulevard and Springlake Drive in San Leandro, police said.

They identified the victim of the 5:55 p.m. collision as Brittney Silva of San Leandro. Police said officers found Silva, who already was dead, about fifty yards south of the intersection of Hesperian Boulevard and Springlake Drive.

The train stopped on the tracks a few hundred yards south of the intersection following the collision, according to police. Police said witnesses told investigators that Silva was walking southbound along the east sidewalk of Hesperian Boulevard wearing "earbud" style headphones and as the train approached the intersection one of the witnesses yelled at her to try to warn her of the approaching train.

However, Silva didn't respond to the witness, possibly because she didn't hear him, according to police. Witnesses told police that the railroad's crossing arms were functioning properly at the time of the collision.
