The San Leandro Unified School District is the main public school district serving the city of San Leandro. Its 12More schools -  eight elementary (K-5), two middle (6-8), one high school (9-12) and one alternative high school serve approximately 8,900 students. A new campus, the San Leandro High School Fred T. Korematsu campus, opened in 2010 to serve all 9th grade students. The district includes an alternative, continuation high school (Lincoln) and independent study center, and the San Leandro Adult School. The staff is made up of 500 teachers and 250 classified personnel. The superintendent is Cindy Cathey.

YOSAC (the Youth Orchestra of Southern Alameda County) provides group instruction in orchestral music to localMore school-age kids. Groups meet for weekly rehearsals throughout the school year. The group holds public concerts in December, March and May. Reharsals are held at Bret Harte Middle School in Hayward.
