The group's headquarters includes a library of Portuguese books, which can be checked out, and a small museum dedicated to the history of Portuguese immigrants in San Leandro. </p> <p>The Portuguese Fraternal Society of America formed on January 1, 2010 as a consolidation of several Portuguese fraternal organizations: The Brotherhood of the Divine Holy Spirit (I.D.E.S.), Conselho Supremo da Sociedade do Espirito Santo, União Portuguesa do Estado da California (U.P.E.C.), and União Portuguesa Protectora do Estado da California. One of its founding organizations, the U.P.E.C., is among the oldest civic organizations in San Leandro; it was founded in 1880 by 30 Portuguese immigrants, all but one of them from the Azores. </p>
