Matt was a lovely guy with a family. He was very well liked. There's a service on Thursday at…Read More Guerrero mortuary but I don't yet know the time. I do know there is a bit of a fundraiser get together at the Englander at 4 on the same day. Matt had two children also so if you feel like you'd want to donate you can do it there.

Whats the full story ? what all thoses mexican shops at the corner someone had to see something .…Read More who was turning at the corner or who did not stop . then why not go to the San Leandro ,hospital which was just blocks away .

Um, comprehensive reading. I didn't say you can't have fun. And if your "fun" is…Read More dependent upon the music the school is playing over the loudspeaker, then you're not doing it right :) The teachers are the ones upset, and they are there on a regular basis, no? So I trust their opinion on this matter. Again, comprehensive reading. I did not say the HS was ghetto. I said it is perceived to be ghetto. Perhaps partly due to offensive rap music being played over the loudspeakers? Just a thought...

All you parents and adults say that high school is the time to have fun. I have even been told…Read More multiple times how these will be the "best years of my life", yet you have the audacity to say that students should not be able to "laugh and have fun". That is just outrageous to me. The administrators have made it very clear that the songs must me clean and contain no vulgar content. And the student council is extremely good at making sure the songs are just that. Playing music isn't sanctioning any of "these behaviors" that you insist on talking about. Music is just music, it cannot make a student do anything. And have you even been to the high school? It is not ghetto as you say it is. San Leandro High School is an incredible establishment that has given thousands of kids quality educations. People claim that the High School is so bad, yet they don't even know what is going on there. I was asked once if I would want to go to another school and I called that person crazy. San Leandro High is a great place where kids of all different backgrounds can come together to learn, AND to have fun, through creative outlets like art, education, and MUSIC.

Nice try, but I'm not buying it. First of all, this is school sanctioned, so you cannot compare…Read More this with what high-schoolers may have done in the past. Lots of high schoolers smoke pot, curse, have sex, etc. also, but that doesn't mean these behaviors need to be sanctioned by the school. How about no music at lunch, they are there to learn not dance, laugh and have fun. Less anyone wonders why San Leandro HS is known as a ghetto school...I give you exhibit above :)

State-licensed teacher preparation programs, especially teaching professors, are the first line of…Read More defense against non-research-based and ineffective teaching methods.
Student teaching - only if an education program insists on it - is or can be the second line of defense. Student teachers should note that teaching "internships" lack an in-class master teacher, a teacher who has usually taught successfully for more than 5 years. For most student teachers it is a mistake to not include master teacher supervision in training.
The hiring process is a minimal third barrier to ineffective teaching only made rigorous by multiple candidates. Hiring boards sometimes may not even require a demonstration of teaching ability with students in attendance. Hiring board paid time is limited and policy bends to laws demanding that a qualified teacher be in each classroom by the beginning of each year or else the district has lots of paperwork to do until that position is filled by a credentialed candidate.
Beginning teacher training (BTSA) and/or the first few in-class observations are a fourth line of defense against a failure to reach students through teaching methods.
Now let's turn to the research about educating students: "There is a lot of discussion these days about investing in teachers and ‘improving teacher quality,’ but improving the quality of our parenting and of our children’s earliest environments may be even more important. Let’s invest in parents so they can better invest in their children." While the above quote is from this linked article, this article is more about socioeconomic inequalities than about hiring and firing teachers. Guardians and/or the primary care-giver are the teachers; they partner with trained teachers to teach children. When there is no enriched home-school partnership – for any of many reasons, most not intended - the road to educational opportunities is much more difficult: http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/04/27/no-rich-child-left-behind/

The recent controversy about the music points out why the union and the status quo, as bad as it may…Read More be, is necessary. Even under this system, teachers feel so threatened that they are anonymous. I am retiring soon, but had told my principal that when test scores became the basis for evaluation, it would be my turn to teach the 'higher' kids after 18 years of ELD and the 'low' group. Love the kids, love eating more.

I am looking forward to the details also. My daughter is an "early bird" Kindergartener.…Read More My mother who picked her up (and sometimes doesn't hear well) said the school had received a call of a man with a gun on the campus, while the kids were at recess. They went into lockdown which they have diligently been practicing, as recently as this week I believe. I have full trust in the staff at Garfield, and am absoltely grateful for what they do, not only in situations such as this, but every day. However as I said, I would like to know the actual details.

As in you wish your kids were there? Or you wish you were back in grammar school yourself. Because I…Read More know that feeling. Only I'd want to retain my life experience. Making the same mistakes all over would be too painful.

To fight this, the public sector unions will spend as much of our money as it takes to preserve…Read More their right to keep extracting money from us to cover their perks.

I don't really see this as a big problem for unions. Most members know the value of their union's…Read More activities and representation. A few may refuse to pay but most know that they enjoy high wages and incredibly good benefits only because of the union's political activities. Why would they not want those activities to continue? I see no need to force the few folks who don't want to pay up to do so.

Apparently some that post in here have no idea what a union does. Yes opt in is a default. So what?…Read More As a union investagates all concerns on a ballot that will effect them, and makes susgestions(for the betterment of the union) meaning to the benifit of there members. A majority of members know this and its not a problem. What is a problem is crack pot articles like this. Apparently this article wants a 25,000 member union to have 24,400 members to have to opt in to something they already agree with hoping a lot will not because its another pain in the a@@ in there daily things to do. On the other hand if 600 members feel so strong againt it, then they can opt out.
