The Golden Rule of Networking

Building relationships is the best way to build your business.

I don't know many small businesses who don't need to network. We are looking for new clients or customers, partners, service providers or opportunities.

Over the years I have seen the benefits of the Golden Rule. When you go out and network; seek to listen, learn and add value. If you go out to get business, tell your story and bag an opportunity--you'll be less successful. Successful business is about building relationships. People do business with people they trust. You need to be patient and help others. Share resources, connect people who you know can help each other or pass on leads.

One organization that many small business people get engaged with is Business Networking International (BNI). Their motto is "Giver's Gain." They have chapters all over the East Bay, and the world.
