George Tucker: Volunteer Instructor for AARP Driver Safety Program

George Tucker, a retired CPA, is also a volunteer with the California Senior Legislature.

George Tucker has held high offices like the Controller and Chief Financial Officer of the East Bay Regional Park District, Director of Finance of the City of San Bruno, and Assistant Treasurer of Levi Strauss & Co.  He retired from full time employment in 1994, but still works part-time as a tax preparer.

George Tucker is a San Leandro hometown  boy who graduated from and has lived here for 55 years (except for a few years when he was in the U.S. Army and living in other cities of the Bay Area). He has a Bachelor of Science degree and MBA from UC Berkeley, California.

Upon retirement George Tucker said “he had decided to make his personal mission to be improving the quality of life for senior citizens.”

To achieve this mission he has volunteered his time, energy and talents to serve in different capacities that would benefit the seniors in our community, region and state.

He is a volunteer and has been involved in the California Senior Legislature (CSL) for over four years. He is one of the 80 Senior Assembly Members.

At the annual sessions in Sacramento, he looks into the financial aspects of numerous proposals submitted to the State Legislature related to senior issues. He is also the Vice-Chair of the Bay Area Caucus of CSL, which meets nine times a year to follow up on the progress of the submitted proposals.

Tucker is on his second four-year term on the Alameda County Advisory Commission on Aging. The Commission advises on the policies and procedures for the County in the area of aging.

He has also been serving on the San Leandro Senior Commission since 2002 and currently chairs the commission.

He has been an AARP (Association of American Retired Persons) Driver Safety Program volunteer instructor for the last 15 years. He conducts six to eight classes a year. Most of the classes are in San Leandro, but he has taught in San Lorenzo and Fremont. Drivers over 55 can get a discount on their car insurance if they attend this class.

In the past, Tucker was a member of the Board of Directors of the Senior Services Foundation for its first eight years. He helped start this non-profit organization with the purpose of improving the lives of seniors living in San Leandro.

Tucker was recently elected on the Board of the Bay-o-Vista Improvement Association.

Eighty-year-old Tucker is a charming dancer and plays bridge. In this age of multiple marriages and divorces, he proudly says that he has been married to his wife Jane for 52 years. They have three children and seven grandchildren.

It would be wonderful if we could clone volunteers like George Tucker.
