Upcoming CIty Council Meeting and CItywide Town Halls

On July 5, the Council will select a recruiting firm for a new city manager, and vote on a resolution that the Council pay the employee contribution into their pensions.

At the Tuesday, July 5 City Council meeting, we will discuss how the state budget impacts San Leandro, select a recruiting firm for a new city manager, and vote on a resolution that the City Council pay their employee contribution into their pension.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. in the City Council chambers at City Hall.

Paying Into Our Pensions

Council members are eligible to receive pension benefits as part of our compensation. While the total cost of these benefits is small, a fraction of our budget, paying our portion of our pensions is an important symbolic action.

Currently, unlike most cities in Alameda County, San Leandro taxpayers pay 100% of employee pensions as part of the city staff's negotiated compensation. For our city to achieve a long-term, sustainable budget, as well as ensure pensions for all employees in the future, we must ask our employees to work with us in sharing these costs.

Town Hall Meetings

I am committed to our city government operating in a transparent manner, responsive to the needs of our community — a goal that is shared by the entire council. Together, we're conducting Town Hall meetings for all council districts. These will recur on an annual basis.

We just completed a successful Town Hall meeting for Council Districts 3 and 4, and earlier in the year had a well-attended meeting for Council Districts 1 and 2. A Town Hall for Council Districts 5 and 6 will likely occur in September. Details will be posted on the city website as well as on my Facebook page

In addition,we recently conducted a Coffee with the Mayor focused on our Chinese-speaking community and will be conducting one for our Spanish-speaking community this Fall.

Town Hall meetings are an important tool to bring City Hall to our neighborhoods, directly answering your questions in person. You can watch a video of the latest meeting at http://www.sanleandrobytes.com/archives/014001.html. It starts at the end of my introduction and covers reports from the Police Chief and traffic department. My budget summary is at the 1:29 min. mark of the video.
