Lit San Leandro in the News, Major City Projects and BRT Work Session

The installation of San Leandro's high speed, fiber optic network is progressing well. Over $1 billion in construction and infrastructure projects are underway in San Leandro.

This week, I was guest with Dr. Patrick Kennedy of OSIsoft on "The CEO Show," a program on the Bay Area technology industry that airs weekly on KLIV AM radio 1590.  The interview focused on Lit San Leandro, our innovative public-private partnership to install a fiber optic broadband network in San Leandro.

Dr. Kennedy explained how the data revolution is leading to an increasing demand for bandwidth from businesses in virtually every industry.  I described how Lit San Leandro fits into a larger pattern of investment in San Leandro and our objective of revitalizing the city's industrial and commercial core.

The installation of the fiber network is progressing well.  This week workers installed it along East 14th Street and up Davis Street from the San Leandro BART station to near the main library.  We will be connecting the public computers at the library to the network.

The first business, other than OSIsoft, to join Lit San Leandro is F.H. Dailey Chevrolet.  In a Daily Review article, Steve Song, the owner of the auto dealer, called the decision to hook up to the loop "the best investment I've ever made."

This demonstrates the competitive advantages Lit San Leandro offers existing businesses, even ones not traditionally thought of as within the tech sector.  We, of course, are promoting the network as part of our efforts to attract new businesses, and quality jobs, to our city.

Over $1 billion in new private and public projects and infrastructure improvements are occurring in San Leandro, highlighted by the new Kaiser hospital complex under construction.  At a June 25, 2012 City Council work session, staff gave an update on these projects and ones planned for the near future.    Here is a link to staff presentation:  http://www.sanleandro.org/civica/filebank/blobdload.asp?BlobID=11480

Finally, San Leandro residents and business owners interested in learning about, and commenting on, the latest version of the proposed Bus Rapid Transit project for East 14th Street from the San Leandro-Oakland border to the San Leandro BART station are invited to attend a work session hosted by the San Leandro City Council.

The work session will take place this Monday, July 9th, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., in the Council Chambers at the San Leandro City Hall, 835 E. 14th Street.

Representatives from AC Transit and the City of San Leandro will discuss the proposed project and review changes that have been made following the publication of the project's environmental impact report and earlier public input.

Please come and offer further input to the City Council  and AC Transit officials on the BRT project.
