1)  On the Agenda for the City Council Meeting Tonight

On Monday, March 18, 2013, at 7:00 p.m., the City Council will receive an update on public safety issues from Police Chief Sandra Spagnoli, review contracts for street maintenance and repair work this summer, vote on a resolution in support of reducing greenhouse emissions and a new, three-year contact with the San Leandro Police Officers Association.

We will also discuss whether to raise the Rainbow/Pride flag at City Hall next week in conjunction with oral arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court in two cases involving same sex marriage to signify the City Council's support of marriage equality, and consider a request to create a committee on city -school district relations.

The City of San Leandro and the San Leandro Chamber of Commerce will partner in hosting the annual State of the City address on Thursday, March 28, 2013, at 6:00 p.m.  The public is invited to attend this free event, which will take place at the San Leandro Senior Community Center, 13909 East 14th Street, next to San Leandro Hospital.

This is a dynamic and challenging time in San Leandro's history. With the assistance of our civic, neighborhood and business leaders, and many partners at all levels of government, we are transforming San Leandro into a center of innovation.

3)  Visit by FCC Chairman Generates Positive Press Coverage of San Leandro

Last month, at my invitation, Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski visited San Leandro to learn more about the unique public/private partnership that created San Leandro’s fiber optic network, known as Lit San Leandro (www.litsanleandro.com). The network became operational last year, providing businesses speeds of up to 10 gigabits per second, or 2,000 times faster than the average U.S. internet connection.

Chairman Genachowski's visit led to a front page article in the San Francisco Business Times on business development in San Leandro and a KPIX-TV news report (visit http://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/video/8599409-san-leandro-offering-ultra-fast-internet/)

4)  Help Make San Leandro a Bicycle and Pedestrian Friendly City

The City is recruiting for an at-large member of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC). Applications are due Friday, March 22, 2013.

The BPAC consists of one City Council appointed member from each of the six Council Districts and five at-large members. The mission of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) is to provide input to the City on a comprehensive master plan for bicycle and pedestrian facilities that provide complementary amenities and healthful transportation choices to the citizens of San Leandro.
