San Leandro's McBride Takes Eighth at State Track Championships

San Leandro High sent six athletes to State this year, making it arguably the best track team in the school's history.

It was a great year for track at .

Six athletes competed in the California Interscholastic Federation State Championships this past weekend in Clovis, CA — the biggest representation in at least the last 20 years.

That makes this year’s squad arguably the best in San Leandro’s history.

One of those athletes, Andre McBride, broke two school records and ultimately finished eighth in the Boys 100-meter dash, giving San Leandro their best result this year at the State Championships.

His trials heat time of 10.71 sec. broke the previous school record — his own, which he set earlier this season.

Last week McBride took home first place at the NCS Championships in the 100-meter dash.

McBride also competed in the Boys 200-meter dash at the State Championships, and although he did not make the finals, his trials time of 21.79 sec. is now the new top mark at San Leandro High.

McBride is a junior this year and was previously on San Leandro Patch. He is looking forward to being a top contender again next year and hopefully, attracting some serious scholarship offers from Division 1 schools.

Sophomore Christian Carter competed in the Boys 400-meter dash and finished sixth in his trials, but did not make the finals. He had a time of 50.04 sec.

The Girls 4 x 400-meter relay team, which took second in NCS, ran a strong trials heat, but did not make the finals in their event. That squad was fielded by junior Akeilani Turner, junior Aliyah Wilkins, sophomore Nicolette Brown, and sophomore Nijae Jones.

“The fact that we sent six athletes to the state championships is pretty extraordinary in and of itself,” said San Leandro Track Coach Martin Capron.

Capron believes that with the results the team posted this year, and , the high school’s track and field program has a bright future with even more stars in it. Plus, all six athletes who made it to state are returning next year.
