San Leandro Weekend Planner - May 18-20

Shoot some hoops, roll some strikes, support our local Little League or watch the A's and Giant's face-off. All this and more is happening this weekend right here at home.

 

Looking for something to get you up and moving this weekend? We've assembled a sampling of fun events right here in our own backyard that should do the trick. If you know of other happenings worth checking out in San Leandro this weekend, feel free to post them in the comments section.

Family Fun Bowling Night

Where/When: This Friday, May 18 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at , 887 Manor Blvd.

Why Go: San Leandro's Manor Bowl has set aside a special time on Friday nights for families to hit the lanes.  Included in the special family package is shoe rental, two hours of unlimited bowling, party lights, music and a prize drawing.  You can also find out about their youth bowling programs when you visit or go to their youth website page here.  Manor Bowl has 30 lanes and has been family-owned and operated for over 50 years.

Price: Package deal costs $12 per person.  (You must have a minimum of two adults and two children to qualify for the package price.)

 

Adult Basketball Open Gym

Where/When: Happens at 7 p.m. this Friday, May 18 at 2200 Fairmont Drive, San Leandro.

Why Go: Because it's Friday. Dribble away the tension of the week and connect with other sports-minded men and women age 18 or older in a safe, supervised environment. To learn more about this on-going Friday night program, call 510-667-3285 or e-mail acdeputysal@gmail.com

An Enchanted Evening in Italy

Where/When: This Friday at 5:30 p.m. at the , 2305 Washington Avenue, San Leandro.

Why Go: Not only will you enjoy an all-you-can-eat pasta dinner with a salad bar and bid on fabulous auction items, you will be helping raise money for the Principled Academy school's computer lab.  Some of the auction items on the block include overnight hotel stays, winery tours and birthday party packages. In addition to the silent and live auctions there will be dancing throughout the evening.  This is an adult-only event. For more information, call 510-351-6400.

Price: $35 per person at the door.

 

The Happy Birds Performing Parrots Show

Where/When: Saturday, May 19 at 10:30 a.m. at the 1241 Manor Blvd., San Leandro.

Why Go:  This is part of the library's Saturday Morning Family Program series and is hugely popular. The Happy Birds show will feature the antics of Amazon parrots, brightly colored macaws and talented cockatoos performing tricks and singing. Come prepared to have some fun during this interactive show with some very special feathered-friends. 

Price: Admission is free, but space is limited and you must have a ticket to attend. You can get a ticket from the library in advance. Call (510) 577-7970 for more information.

 

San Leandro Historical Railway Public Hours

Where/When: Saturday May, 19 at 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1302 Orchard Avenue, San Leandro. (Additional special open house June 2 and 3)

Why Go: Come watch San Leandro Historical Railway Society members working on the model railroad and running trains. Can't make it this weekend? Well, mark your calendars because there will also be a special summer open house for all ages June 2 and 3.  The society will be running G & O scale trains outside on the garden railway and HO scale trains inside. There will also be a bake sale and yard sale to benefit the society.  

Price: Admission is free. Donations to the historical depot are always welcome. 

 

"Jazz, Acapella and Other Classy Tunes - A Musical Extravaganza by the Better Music World Club"

Where/When: Saturday, May 19 at 2 p.m. at the located at 300 Estudillo Avenue, San Leandro.

Why Go: Here is a chance to get your culture-fix right here in town. Who needs the big city when we have local events like this one?  The performance is being sponsored by the San Leandro Public Library and the Arts Council of San Leandro. It is being directed and produced by Kathleen Skinner-Saffas and will include virtuoso singers and musicians. Organizers say it is for everyone of all ages and describe it as  "good clean family oriented entertainment".

Price: Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children age 12 and under. Tickets can be purchased at the Information desk.

 

Carnival Fundraiser for the Ashland Little League Trophy Fund

Where/When: Sunday, May 20 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at baseball fields located behind the new Holland Park at 16301 E. 14th Street, San Leandro.

Why Go: There will be carnival games, music, food and a raffle drawing. To learn more call 510-415-0717 or e-mail ashla­ndllinfo@­gmail.­com.

Price: Free admission. Game booth tickets are just 25 cents a piece. The raffle drawing tickets are 3 for $1 or 20 for $4.  Every person that attends the carnival will get a free entry into the drawing for two (2) Oakland A's tickets. Extra entries are only $1 each.

 

Oakland A's and San Francisco Giants Game Broadcast

Where/When: Sunday, May 20 at 1 p.m. at the 101 Parrott Street, San Leandro.

Why Go: Come root for your favorite Bay Area baseball players - take your pick of teams the Giants or the A's,  and show your spirit with other fans. Admit it, even if you can't get to the actual game in San Francisco at AT&T Park, you really do need to get up off your couch and get out this weekend. San Leandro has at least two sports bars with lots of events happening day in and out.
