Athlete of the Week: Timakoi Latu

This rugby star brings focus and poise to the new boys volleyball program at San Leandro High School.

has added boys volleyball to its competition sports portfolio and, as is tradition with the school, the program is already producing stand out athletes.

Timakoi Latu is a captain of the inaugural team. He’s setting the bar high for the future leaders of the squad.

Watching Timikoi play against Heritage High School on last Thursday, you could see a natural leader. Latu racked up ten digs and 8 kills in the game, tying for the most kills on the team. (SL High lost the match 2 -1.)

He displayed incredible poise and focus during good and bad rallies, sacrificing his body when needed and keeping his mental game sharp by not showing frustration when a play went bad.

It may be easy for Latu to not sweat the small stuff in volleyball because he’s so used to the hard hitting, grinding nature of competition rugby.

Latu plays fly-half, and center for the Hayward Griffins, and judging by his size, I’m sure he is a force to be reckoned with.

In speaking to Latu, he comes across very humble and respectful, but with eyes full of confidence and excitement for the sport of volleyball. When asked what the key was when it comes to volleyball vs. rugby, Latu swiftly replied, “It’s all about timing [in volleyball].”

Latu was born in Tonga and his family moved him stateside when he was three years old to give him a chance at a better future. The great thing is he’s not only building a better future for himself, but for San Leandro High School athletics as well, giving his team a chance to have a great showing in their first year out.

The next Boys Volleyball match will be on Thursday, April 8 at 5 p.m. at American High School in Fremont.
