Athlete of the Week: Kevin Nava

"He makes it look effortless" – baseball coach AJ Bromstead

It looks like San Leandro High School has found its own younger version of Tim Lincecum in freshman phenom pitcher Kevin Nava. With his shaggy hair and effortless pitching success on the mound, some say the comparison is dead on. Lincecum is Nava’s favorite athlete, too.

In his first three varsity games this year Nava pitched 10 innings, with 10 strike-outs and just two earned runs.

Nava certainly shows he has the drive to be great. His goals this year are to win every game and pitch at least one complete game.

With his fast ball already touching 80 mph, he has what he needs to help his team win. Nava is a student of the game as well, always calculating which pitch is going to work best against each batter, and he stresses that good defense is key in keeping opposing teams' run count low.

The varsity team is senior-heavy this year, with nine of them on the roster, and Nava’s pitching could help them make a good run.

Coach A. J. Bromstead says of Nava, “He looks like he belongs out there on the mound.”

Born in Los Angeles and raised here in San Leandro, Nava started his baseball career in the backyard with his dad when he was 6 years old. He started with the Floresta Little League at age 9 and has been able to produce success at every level since. He hopes one day a college will offer him a scholarship.

League play begins this week, and it looks like Nava will be making an early name for himself.
