A Shout Out For Giant's Perfect Game

Okay, so it's on the lighter side of life but maybe it makes you smile.

Chris Haft of MLB.com said it well: Matt Cain's right arm, a bit of luck and a remarkable diving catch by Gregor Blanco in the seventh inning were elements in the first perfect game in the San Francisco Giants' 130-year history.

There is a slim connection between the Giants' first and the East Bay.

Patch editor Kari Hulac, whose husband, a sports editor, attended the game, said the last out was made by Jason Castro of Castro Valley.

Not only that but the umpire, who hails from Cal State East Bay, is the only ump in Major League history to work two perfect games.

But she didn't know his name or the other game. Do you know?

Did you see the game? What do you think?

No, but I heard the news about it, and I congratulate Matt Cain on his perfect game last night. By the way, CSN Bay Area will reair last night's game at 7:30 PM tonight (here's the schedule: http://www.csnbayarea.com/pages/tvlisting_bayarea), so I set my DVR just in case I'd feel like watching it. Go Giants!

And I wish CSN Bay Area would correct their online listings right now...

One half of the umpire mystery above was solved by Cal State East Bay spokesman Barry Zepel (a San Leandro resident, incidentally). He emailed to say: "The umpire is Ted Barrett. He also played football here at Cal State East Bay when the university was known as Cal State Hayward." Still unknown: what was the other perfect game that Barrett umpired?

David Cone's perfecto for the Yankees against Montreal July 18,1999. It was Yoggi Berra Day at Yankee Stadium and Yoggi caught the ceremonial first pitch from Don Larsen, who had thrown the first perfect game for the Yankees in the '56 World Series. Barrett called balls and strikes for both Cain and Cone and I believe he is the only umpire to "call" two perfect games, but others have been on crews for more than one. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/8050675/san-francisco-giants-matt-cain-ted-barrett-plate-second-perfect-game http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Cone%27s_Perfect_game
