Won't Back Down: School Reform Movie Or Sappy Polemic?

This new film show how parents use a "trigger law" to improve a school run by uninspired teachers and administrators. Is it a blueprint for positive change or Hollywood propaganda?

Every 20 years or so Hollywood takes note of public education and produces a film of merit.

"To Sir, with Love" is an example of the genre set abroad.

"Stand and Deliver" brings us into the classroom in Los Angeles.

Now a film called "Won't Back Down" dramatizes how two moms and one idealistic teacher battle a bevy of uninspired administrators and teachers in an effort to transform their childrens' school.

The reviews are mixed.

One critic called it "a profoundly surprising and powerful film, one that’s certain to provoke strong reactions from audiences."

Another described it as "a pseudo-controversial education drama that will only open the eyes of the truly ignorant or utterly misinformed."

The politics are important because the drama revolved around the concept of a "trigger law."

Such laws, now on the books in seven states, California included, allow a majority of the parents in a school to take a no-confidence vote and demand some sort of remedial transformation, according to U.S. News & World Reports.

With 20 other states thinking about giving parents a chance to pull the trigger, the movie is causing some concern among people in the education world.

"There are many reasons to be concerned about the images of educators portrayed in the movie and the fanfare surrounding this type of law — which so far has only been used in one instance but has piqued the interest of legislatures in several states," writes Anne L. Bryant, Executive Director of the National School Boards Association (NSBA).

What do you think? Do you want to see the film? Would you like to pull the trigger at your school? And, if so, what would you be aiming at?

What a surprize. No comments from Mike Katz. No comments from Marga Lacabe. No comments from Leah Hall. No comments from Mike Sonuvamayor. No comments from Tony Usedtobemayor. No comments from Mack Rose who wants to be Mayor. No Chris Crow, he is mumbling because his fist is up his %** and his shoe laces are caught in his braces. No comments from the Haters.
Wonder Why. Could be the movie is so bad as to be not worth talking about. Could be that no one has seen the movie, but that never kept any of the commenters from expressing their opinions. In fact I would have assumed that all of them would have agreed with something. Actually knowing something has never kept any of our favorites from expressing their opinions. Tossing out the losers and complacent non-performers and actually producing real results is not going to get much in the way of comments. The politicians (remember that San Leandro has more than 67% Democratic registration and the Democratic Party will never move against the Teacher's Union) so now we know why no comment. Just a bunch of cowards or weasels or whatever you want to call someone who will not but the trend.

This movie is about neither effective "school reform" or Hollywood propaganda. It's about turning public education into a business. Step one: trigger laws. It's an illogical decision and bad for student success.

In addition to there being no comments from any of the above I note the absence of comment generally. I will rerun this in a couple of days. Could be people want to see the movie before saying anything. Or the topic could be a dud. Thanks, Thomas and Janell, for preventing this from being a strike out.

Haven't seen it. Of course teachers' unions would hate it because "trigger laws" are an end-run on their monopoly over public schools and tax money. Just like they hate vouchers and charter schools.

Haven't seen it. Don't want to pull the trigger because we have been very happy with San Leandro schools. With that said, there are many challenges & plenty of room for improvement. Yet from day one we have had, and continue to have, some fantastic teachers.

Good teachers have nothing to fear from a "trigger."
It's the union fat cats and the incompetents they protect that illegally block it. "Adelanto Schools Parent Trigger Law In Effect, District Improperly Rejected Petition, Judge Rules " From the Huffington post, no less. The Adelante school district continues to flout the law. Just like districts across the entire state have ignored the Stull Act for 40 years. Why? It's not "for the children." It's for the unions. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/23/judge-socal-district-impr_n_1695571.html

And you think that plunking down a very low income housing project in the middle of cheap housing inRead More San Leandro is more like Castro Valley? or more like West/East Oakland. It's more like the latter. Can't wait for the drive-by shootings and muggings to ratchet up when we thrown away $9M in tax dollars on building a new downtown SL BART ghetto.

It is unfortunate the Bridge has been unable to stop all crime in Oakland. Sadly, that lesson willRead More probably apply to San Leandro too.

It's slightly used but I don't remember where I bought it from. I don't see any brand name on it. IRead More just priced it based on the lowest one available on Amazon. If you're interested, make me an offer. Maybe we can agree on it. Thanks for your inquiry.

Leah, do you have the authorization from Disney for the use of the copyrighted Dumbo character youRead More use for your blog? I thought that the policy of Patch was to deny access to non-authorized materials such as this.
