Will Vikings Or Pirates Be Sobbing Saturday Afternoon?

Commemorative towels for the last game at old Burrell Field as alumni of both schools play flag football and renew friendly rivalries.

Burrell Field will open at noon on Saturday and the game between Viking and Pirate alumni will commence at 12:30 pm, rain or shine -- but which side will need the crying towels that are among the memorabilia being lined up for this event?

Organizers thank Pirate Alumna Carlene Meitz of Carlene's T-Shirt Corner as well as Bob Vance, also a Pirate alumnus for getting these game towels.

If you're not already in the know, find out more about the game . It also has a PDF that lists a partial roster of the 70 or so players and cheerleaders taking part.

Viking fans seems to have the edge in passion heading toward the showdown. They lead Pirate partisans by a 50 to 43 percent margin in a poll asking who readers are rooting for.

I played for San Leandro High in 1964 JV game and we kicked butt on their field.

SLHS took it this time but everyone had a good time. Afterwards people went to the Englander. People who were foes years ago were talking about old times, sharing stories, having cocktails and having a good time together. I for one am glad I showed up.
