Students also take English and social studies within SLAM and complete many different multimedia projects using English and social studies content.

Every year, during an annual Season of Service, Period of Peace, students at San Leandro High School spend 10 weeks practicing the principles of non-violence as practiced by civil rights leaders Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Cesar Chavez.

During the Season of Service, SLAM students embark on a four week rolling fast that commemorates Cesar Chavez' 1968 Fast for Non-Violence.

Each student fasts one day, in relay, to raise awareness on a particular issue affecting the community: child abuse, domestic abuse, LGBT violence, lost friends, and fallen heroes.

On the final day of the fast, SLAM students are joined by other San Leandro students in a school-wide call to end violence.

"Congratulations are due to the incredible faculty and students of SLAM," said Evan Goldberg, with the Character Education Partnership. "Their Fast for Nonviolence both inspired and helped lead the Season of Service, Period of Peace. SLAM has truly transformed San Leandro High School."
