The musical production of The Wiz is based on The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.  It was rewritten by William F. Brown to be a soulful rendering of the original classic.  It is basically the same story with Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man, Lion and Witches, good and bad. Composer Charlie Smalls wrote the soulful and funk-filled score;  favorite songs from The Wiz are “Ease on Down the Road”, “Home”, “If You Believe” and “Don’t Nobody Bring Me No Bad News”. The Wiz won 7 Tony Awards in 1975. It was later made into a successful movie starring Michael Jackson and Diana Ross.

A large cast of over 50 people bring this timeless musical to life in San Leandro at the Performing Arts Center. Many of the munchkins are played by San Leandro elementary grade school students; the rest of the cast are high school students.  The lead, Dorothy, is played by SL Senior, Jasmin Smith-Torres, who is a singer, actress, dancer and plays alto sax.

The Creative team for the San Leandro High School Dramatic Arts production:

Sue Ellen Nelsen, Director; John Sheridan, Artistic Producer; Dallis Wright Morash, Choreagrapher;

Evan Crone, Musical Director; Andrea Schwartz, Lighting Designer and Liz Nelsen, Costume Designer.
