Transitional Kindergarten

Transitional Kindergarten is relatively new. It gives younger children a head start and is considered the first year of a two-year Kindergarten program, bridging preschool and kindergarten.

Research shows that children benefit from an opportunity to learn important academic and social skills in a hands-on way that supports their development.

“Transitional Kindergarten is a wonderful option that gives these younger students the gift of time to develop at their own pace while continuing to build the social, emotional and academic skills that will help them succeed in elementary school and beyond,” said Superintendent Cindy M. Cathey.

Although San Leandro Unified School District’s Transitional Kindergarten program is going to be offered at four sites (McKinley, Monroe, Roosevelt and Wilson Elementary schools) this upcoming school year, it is open to all eligible children in the District. Families must register at their home school.

Transitional Kindergarten is:

  • Free and part of public school education
  • Offering children a specialized and developmentally appropriate curriculum aligned with kindergarten standards
  • Taught by credentialed teachers
  • A two-year kindergarten, with children moving to a traditional kindergarten class in the second year
  • Open to any student who turns 5 between October 2-December 2, 2013
