San Leandro Public Library is the Perfect Summer Oasis

I remember being on the bus coming from CSU East Bay a few years ago listening to a couple of educators chatting about Hayward's public library. A little way into their conversation, the pair began excitedly talking about San Leandro's public library and how envious they were of its aesthetics and features. Flash forward to 2013 and I see no reason for them to change their feelings, as our library is one of the best in the Bay Area.

Sitting in the library earlier this week, I was reminded of just how much there is to experience when you stop by for a visit. The snack shop is a great place to get a drink, sit back, and enjoy some peaceful reading before making your way into the main section of the library. On your way in, it's more than worth making a stop at the little bookstore they have set up. It's filled with great bargains and even a few collectible books that are worth the higher price tag. My shelves have become a bit fuller over the years perusing through what the library has for sale.

Once you're inside, however, the real magic starts. There's an abundance of computers lining the walls both on the bottom and top floors, ready for anyone who needs quick access to the internet or to search through the books on hand. It is sad to see the library dependent on computers long past due for an upgrade, but they serve their purpose (and someone was brilliant enough to install Chrome web browsers!). The selection of books is respectable, not voluminous by any means, but you will almost always find a title or two that will fit your needs.

The children's section of the library is robust and inviting to young readers, which is ever more important in a society dominated by social media and mindless entertainment. It's great seeing so many San Leandrans who make their way to the library with their kids and making reading a part of their lives. The San Leandro history room is also an incredible resource for people wanting to learn more about our wonderful city. For those who just want to recline with a tablet in comfy chairs, the library's free WiFi and outlets for charging electronics is another boon to an already alluring place.

Besides the basic amenities, the services offered at the SL library are wonderful. The Millennial Academy in particular stands out to me, as it's a great way to embrace a crowd of people who tend to not find themselves in a library. The programs are varied, touch on popular activities and interests that people in my age bracket enjoy, and just overall represent how forward thinking our library is. I'm looking forward to the videogame event next week, as a matter of fact!

It might seem odd to make going to a library part of your summer plans, but it's really a great place to go and relax, free from the noise and stress of the outside world. Be sure to visit San Leandro's webpage for more information on the library, events, and ways to help contribute!
