Winter Spare The Air Alert Issued For Sunday

This will be the fifth time this winter season Bay Area residents have been told not to burn wood.

Winter Spare the Air alert has been issued for the Bay Area for Sunday.

Officials at the Bay Area Air Quality Management District said despite Friday's rain, the region' cold weather is trapping pollutants close to the ground and making air quality unhealthy.

The Sunday alert prohibits Bay Area residents from burning wood, manufactured fire logs or any other solid fuel both indoors and outdoors for 24 hours.

First-time violators are given the option of taking a wood smoke awareness class or paying a $100 fine. Second violations result in a $500 fine and the penalties rise with each violation after that.

This is the fifth Spare the Air alert issued this winter season.
