Should San Leandro Change Its Slogan?

"Proud Of Our Past, Looking To the Future." — What do you think of the City's current slogan? What new slogan would you give San Leandro?

"Proud Of Our Past, Looking To the Future," is the current slogan for the City of San Leandro.

However, Mayor Stephen Cassidy hopes this will soon change, according to a recent post he made on his Facebook page.

"Symbols and words are extremely important, especially when used by the government. This is why I wish to change the official slogan for the City of San Leandro," he wrote.

Why the change? Cassidy said the text is too generic and could apply to any city. Nothing San Leandro specific is reflected in the slogan, he wrote in his post.

Another reason Cassidy hopes to change the slogan is so San Leandro's history can be acknowledged — both good and bad.

He brought up discrimination in the past that had targeted African-Americans to prevent them from purchasing homes and moving into San Leandro.

"To use a slogan stating we are proud of our past turns a blind eye to this aspect of San Lenadro's history and is an affront to those that were subjected to racism," he wrote.

The slogan change will be discussed by City Council at an upcoming meeting, Cassidy wrote. However, a date has yet to be determined.

If the Council shows support in the change, Cassidy said the City will develop a process for public input and participation in selecting a new slogan.
