Railway Depot To Host Reading of 'The Switchman'

Mark your calendar for Saturday, March 10. Tour of rail museum follows reading.

 

The San Leandro Historical Railway Society will partner with the San Leandro Library in a reading of Juan Jose Arreola’s The Switchman at the San Leandro Railway Depot on Saturday, March 10 at 11 a.m. Admission is free.

The reading selection is from the Sun, Stone and Shadows: 20 Great Mexican Short Stories which is part of San Leandro Library's Big Read 2012 campaign.

The event will run until 2 p.m. After the reading those attending will be given a tour of the historic 1898 rail passenger depot, which includes over 4,000 feet of model railroad tracks.

The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest. It provides people the opportunity to read and discuss a single book within their community.

The San Leandro Public Library has selected for its community to read an anthology of some of Mexico's finest authors titled Sun, Stone and Shadows: 20 Great Mexican Short Stories. The Big Read 2012 program will run from March 2012 through May 2012.

The railway's regular hours of operation are Tuesdays from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm. and Saturdays from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Admission is free and the public is welcome. You can reach the railway at 510-569-2490. The address is: 1302 Orchard Ave, San Leandro, CA 94577.
