Possible Conflicts of Interest in San Leandro Hospital Deal

The financial interest and the votes by three doctors might need further review to ensure that the grant-giving by Eden Township Healthcare District can ethically and legally support San Leandro Hospital as planned.

Eden Township Healthcare District's plan to give $20 million to San Leandro Hospital may face the issue of state conflict-of-interest laws that are targetted to preventing "self-dealing" by public officials according to the Contra Costa Times.

Three out of five board members voted last month to raise the money for the hospital, the Contra Costa Times reports.

However, unknown to the attendees at the June 19 meeting, two of those votes were cast by physicians on the medical staff at the hospital, according to the Contra Costa Times. Another board member — Dr. Vin Sawhney — abstained from the vote, saying there was a conflict of interest because he had worked at the hospital for 30 years, according to the Contra Costa Times.
