Plant a Cherry Tree in San Leandro for Arbor Day

The tree planting celebration will be held on April 25 at 4 p.m. at Casa Peralta.

Mayor Stephen Cassidy and the San Leandro City Council are pleased to announce that in celebration of Arbor Day, the City will be hosting a tree planting celebration on Friday, April 25, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. at the historic Casa Peralta, located at 384 W. Estudillo Avenue in downtown San Leandro.

San Leandro has been named a Tree City USA community by the national Arbor Day Foundation to honor its commitment to community forestry.

Cherry trees will be planted this year at Casa Peralta in honor of the 105th anniversary of the upcoming Cherry Festival, which will take place on Saturday, May 31, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m on West Estudillo Avenue.

On April 21, 2014, Mayor Cassidy also will be declaring by proclamation that Arbor Day 2014 in San Leandro shall be known as Tim Orr Day.  Tim Orr is the Tree Supervisor who has served the City of San Leandro for 33 and one-half years and will be retiring at the end of May.  Over the course of his career, Tim has planted, trimmed and cared for countless City trees.

San Leandro's community forestry program includes a wide array of programs, such as:  education and public relations; literature distribution; continuing education for City tree workers; green industry partnerships; collaboration with City engineers and planners for forestry conservation; and planning and management of the approximately 20,000 City-owned trees.

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation (www.arborday.org) in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.
