Photos: Fresh & Easy Market Coming To Town?

A look inside the new grocery store that is the proposed anchor of the Village Marketplace downtown development approved by the City Council Monday night.

 

The San Leandro City Council to approve the Village Marketplace retail and restaurant plaza on the East 14th Street parcel where the Luckys/Albertson's supermarket used to be.

The "anchor tenant" in the development would be a Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market, a new grocery store chain from the United Kingdom.

Fresh & Easy is smaller than a traditional supermarket and features many prepared foods.

Many San Leandrans had wanted to attract a Trader Joe's but city officials have said that chain has refused to enter San Leandro, and is happy with its nearby store in higher-income Castro Valley.

A Los Angeles Times report says Fresh & Easy's British parent firm is under pressure to make the chain profitable or spin it off.
