City Offers New Discount Card For Medicines Not Covered By Insurance

Residents can get average savings of 20 percent off the retail price of commonly prescribed drugs.

San Leandro is making free prescription drug discount cards available to city residents through an initiative sponsored by the National League of Cities.

“This is an important new program for San Leandrans,” said Mayor Stephen Cassidy, expressing hope that it would "help our residents reduce their health care costs.”

Available now, the discount cards have no restrictions based on age, income level or existing health coverage.

Cards can only be used to purchase prescriptions that are not covered by an insurance or Medicare prescription plan.

However, pet medications used to treat a human condition are also covered and may qualify for a discount.

Discounts are also available for many diabetic supplies.

To obtain the new discount card, residents can visit a special CVS Caremark website at www.caremark.com/nlc.

At this online site residents can print the discount card, check drug prices and locate participating pharmacies.
