I think voters need to ask Mack-Rose a question: "How are schools in San Leandro better today because of her work"? She says she has experience "experience overseeing big budgets and large construction projects," but what exactly does this mean? What sort of oversight has she conducted that has uncovered inefficiencies, corruption and has led to positive results? The same thing should be asked of Ursula Reed. What has she accomplished in four years in the City Council? What knowledge of city projects does she have? She hasn't shown any at public meetings, so I'm curious.

She says she has experience "experience overseeing big budgets and large construction projects," Sounds to me she should apply for a job with the finance or building dept. Really? Why would the average voter give a crap about that? Sad, how some can be so clueless.

The SL public schools are so attractive that, over the past decade, SL school-age population has increased 10%, but enrollment in the SLUSD has stayed almost exactly the same.

And the third candidate has been convicted of battery on a police officer and sentenced to 4 months in jail. Sounds like voters will have a plethora of interesting choices to make come November.

Convicted in a trial that was unfair, where the police officer lied but the defense wasn't allowed to show how he has a history of lying under oath. I'm glad that Dan is not hiding in a corner and licking his wounds. I wish more people would have that courage.

Yes, many convicted criminals claim innocence....I'm sure the jury thought Dan was innocent just before or after they declared him guilty. And of course he's not hiding in a corner closet- that would make it hard to campaign for City Council. Bravery indeed!

In this case, however, we are in the position of knowing what the jury was told and what it wasn't allowed to know/hear. That's why there has been such outrage over Dan's conviction.

David Do your numbers count both SLUSD and SLzUSD. There might be an increase in the San Lorenzo school district but not in San Leandro school district, probably not likely but curious
David July 14, 2012 at 03:17 AM
Mike, no. The numbers are from the census comparison between 2010 and 2000 for just San Leandro and the enrollment numbers provide by just SLUSD, not San Lorenzo. As I've posted before, whatever you say about SLUSD, parents are voting with their feet and not enrolling their kids in the schools despite either moving here or raising families here. It's real evidence on just how poorly SL schools are doing.
Paul Vargas July 14, 2012 at 08:27 PM
Schools are a reflection of the students who go there and the parents who either take involvement or don't take involvement. We could take the entire SLUSD and drop all the kids in Danville and all the Danville kids and drop them in San Leandro and in one year San Leandro's schools would be performing spectacularly and Danville's will be be struggling.

I attented a meeting last year at San Leandro High concerning guns on campus. Mack-Rose sat up there and rolled her eyes several times to the parents concern about the issue. Is this the type of attitude we want from our Council memebers? I think NOT
