The City Council of San Leandro will be voting today, Monday the 16th on a resolution to raise the flag of the People’s Republic of China and possibly adorn it with a photo of Mao Zedong.
This resolution was introduced by City Council member Benny Lee and is being supported by the Chinese Consulate in San Francisco. Similar resolutions are reportedly being introduced in San Francisco, Oakland and Alameda.
Serious concerns have been raised by Bay Area politicians and members of Congress. Numerous letters and petitions have been sent from across the world calling on Mayor Stephen H. Cassidy to defeat the resolution.
Jigme Ugen, acting President of a Tibetan political party, the Tibetan National Congress, in his letter to the Mayor wrote: “That is a direct slap in the faces of all peoples, either Chinese or other nations, who continue to remain subjugated under this regime.”
Tibetans and their supporters are mobilizing for a series of direct protests across the Bay Area followed by intense lobbying of local politicians.
The Tibetan National Congress has created a petition for the San Leandro City Council to not raise the flag of the People's Republic of China in San Leandro. To sign the petition, click here.
SF Team Tibet will rally in front of San Leandro City Hall from 6 to 9 p.m., and speak up for the millions of people who don't have the right to do so in China and their occupied territories. Tibetan-Americans and their supporters refuse to allow the long arm of China to meddle in local government affairs.
