Getting Ready for the Plastic Bag Ban

Tips on how to prepare for the ban.

The plastic bag ban is upon San Leandro and the rest of Alameda County.

San Leandro Patch readers voted in a poll earlier in 2012 about how the plastic bag ban might change their ways (find out the results and cast your vote here). The vote was in response to a StopWaste.org's news release about the ban.

Below is the latest release on the ban from Alameda County:

On Jan. 1, Alameda County will join San Francisco, San Mateo County, San Jose and 49 other California cities and counties in no longer providing single-use plastic bags at checkout — making reusable bags a must-have for any Bay Area resident.

Here are some tips to help you incorporate reusable bags into your holidays this year:

  • Save money and avoid the bag charge by bringing reusable bags while doing your holiday shopping. Get a head start on your New Year’s resolution!
  • Give friends and family reusable bags as gifts or stocking stuffers. Stylish, eco-friendly bags can be found at Etsy.com or for as little as $5 on Amazon.
  • Get in the DIY holiday spirit and craft your own reusable bag using only an old T-shirt and scissors (no sew). You can even personalize it with a favorite design or message for a loved one. See here for instructions.

Wow, all the nuts in favor of this ban are over emotional airheads; both male and female. People who want to use to power of Government to take the place of individual responsibility.
Fred Eiger November 30, 2012 at 09:59 am
Prince you are correct. All the idiots on this Board advocating for this are airheaded, tree hugging Socialist nut jobs. These people hate the modern world, have a chip on their shoulder and probably were picked last for hop scotch, kickball or the lunch line in school and now are bitter, delusional, emotional wrecks yearning for some type of societyal recognition.
Fred Eiger November 30, 2012 at 09:59 am
Coffe Cans aren't very biodegradeable. But, they logic and intelligence aren't Gayle's strong points.
Fred Eiger November 30, 2012 at 10:01 am
Having an intelligent conversation with Tree Huggers is part of life's imperfections. Just like a welt on one's butt.
Fred Eiger November 30, 2012 at 10:02 am
I just pour cooking oil in a hole in the backyard. It breaks down by bacteria. All these idiots that talk about biodegradeable forget 7th grade Science.
Fred Eiger November 30, 2012 at 10:29 am
You'll notice that all of the "advocates" for the ban are also the same "advocates" for marijuana, just proof positive that smoking dope leads to paranoia, irrational thinking and other mental ailments.
David November 30, 2012 at 10:53 am
Fred, don't you know that posters on here have experience running multi-billion dollar corporations operating on razor-thin profit margins and therefore their opinions on how Safeway management is doing their jobs are *extremely* valuable?
David November 30, 2012 at 10:54 am
Humans have survived since time immemorial without indoor plumbing too.
David November 30, 2012 at 10:58 am
You didn't know glass was recyclable?
Marga Lacabe November 30, 2012 at 05:30 pm
Actually, Leah is for the ban and against dispensaries (I think), and I'm for dispensaries and against the ban. It's not so easy.
Marga Lacabe November 30, 2012 at 05:45 pm
David, I guess I should have said are "curb side recyclable". I'm pretty sure that when we first got the blue containers for recycling, you couldn't put olive oil bottles in them. I know for a fact that you couldn't put wide-mouth jars. But they've changed the rules since.
Marga Lacabe November 30, 2012 at 06:08 pm
I know that oil is biodegradable, but I read that there are problems with just dumping it in the ground, as it can seep into the water table and contaminate the water.
Marga Lacabe November 30, 2012 at 06:14 pm
Fred, well apparently you /don't/ want anything biodegradable in a landfill. Because when something biodegrades without oxygen it emits methane. State of the art landfills are able to use that methane, but most don't.
David November 30, 2012 at 07:14 pm
1) Water table isn't within your digging distance.
2) We don't drink groundwater here.
Leah Hall November 30, 2012 at 07:52 pm
And I might consider supporting dispenseries located in entertainment districts that have the resources for handling intoxicated "patients." ;-)
anthony November 30, 2012 at 08:22 pm
considering percolation rates, local soils, and the many wells in SL used for irrigation of yards and gardens... topside applications can reach the food chain.
Marga Lacabe November 30, 2012 at 10:44 pm
Oh, and another indication that nobody outside Rob (assuming he read it) and I have actually read this report. When I called Stop Waste.org to see what their recommendations were on what to use to dispose of my garbage, one of their suggestions was to use paper bags. I told the person on the phone that I didn't want to do that because, according to their own report, paper bags that make it to landfills produce greenhouse gasses. She denied it! And when I pointed out that it was in their own report, she had nothing to say about it!.
Yep, I don't think she read it. And if your their own representatives don't have a clue as to what their own reports say, you can bet nobody else read them either.
Marga Lacabe November 30, 2012 at 10:48 pm
Right now the City Council is only considering having marijuana dispensaries in the industrial area of town, where they recently prohibited entertainment.
If you can see the logic of that, raise your hand.
Fran December 1, 2012 at 12:08 am
Marga, what about the bags dog food comes in, they are good to use for garbage. Did they mention anything about sour cream containers? Are they recyclable, or not?
Fred Eiger December 1, 2012 at 04:41 am
Another wasteless post by Anthony. Bacteria and worms break down the oil. To think that it "can reach the food chain" is just plain ignorance. That's like the idiot who thinks that using fish as a fertilizer will cause the fruit on a tree to taste like fish.
anthony December 1, 2012 at 11:35 am
depends on the kind of oil richard, but I did miss the context being cooking oil. Having dealt with a backyard mechanic dumping oil changes on the fence line and the effects on vegetable and fruit production in the area was the context of my comment. What does wasteless mean?
Marga Lacabe December 1, 2012 at 02:26 pm
Fran, I didn't ask them specifically about those bags, but I will on my next e-mail. With the sour cream containers, I'd look in the bottom and see if there is a recyclable symbol. If not, and you can't reuse, then toss.
Fred Eiger December 1, 2012 at 05:04 pm
David, the biggest advocates for this idiocy; Gayle, Leah, Carol and all the other over emotional nuts on here are a pathetic clan of cackling hens who think they are the "mothers" of society who have to tell others how to live. Perhaps they should tend to their own homes, husbands and 1 child before telling others and society how to live and operate.
Fred Eiger December 1, 2012 at 05:07 pm
David, I'm sure some flea ridden hippy like Rob Rich would have no problem with humans defecating on the street, against streets, on curbs etc. As long as they don't use a plastic bag to wipe their cavities.
Fred Eiger December 1, 2012 at 05:12 pm
Gayle, I'd laugh at your post, if it wasn't so pathetic. To think that a plastic bag takes 1000 years to break down is pure and simple lunacy. It's not wonder Barack Hussein Obama, not to mention Ellen Corbett get elected. With hysterical nuts like you coming out in droves like pigs to a slaughter.
Fred Eiger December 1, 2012 at 05:20 pm
David, you have to realize that Tim, Rob, Carol, Fran, Gayle et al are clearly out of their comfort level of reality. They are paranoid lloon who think that they can "save the environment", "stop greenhouse gases", "save the sea otters" and any other whacked out cause that comes from the local marijuana dispensary. But you never hear any of these idiots talk about the "Greenhouse" gases that are emitted from their computers when they post this nonsense, where the money goes/come from to pay for their paranoia. If the common person on the street knew that this ban was even being considered it would have caused a major uproar, but it was kept very quiet, done secretly and now everyone has to have a lower standard of living so that the insane like Rob, Tim, Carol, Fran and Gayle can be the little babies they are and have their way.
Fred Eiger December 1, 2012 at 05:27 pm
Wasteless, in that you post things that make no sense. What part of "wasteless" is it you don't understand? Are we to assume you are putting yourself out as posting something intelligent? Because if you are, they you have also joined the ranks of Rob, Tim, Carol, Gayle and Leah is wasting bandwidth, advocating insanity and being over emotional.
Marga Lacabe December 1, 2012 at 06:20 pm
Well, you can add me to those who are very concerned about saving the environment, greenhouse gases and otters. But it's exactly because I'm concerned that I want to do what's best, not just what seems easiest.
We all have a tendency to want instant fixes and quick, almost painless solutions - but often those are anything but. I have to say this plastic bag issue has been a huge eye opener for me. My initial reaction was to support the plastic bag ban, I even encouraged City Council members to implement it in San Leandro. And I was all for the styrofoam ban. But that's because I, also, hadn't done the research. This is something that I will make sure to do in the future. As I said "first do no harm"
Rob Rich December 1, 2012 at 07:33 pm
I don't like to encourage "Fred," whomever s/he may be, even though that brand of political satire is likely to drive some reasonable people away from the various positions s/he claims to support.
Aside from the pure tedium, I'm concerned that pugilistic ad hominem tends to "chill" speech by new contributors, thereby ensuring the Patch remains a small, insular club of the "usual suspects." However, in the spirit of science, I decided to test "Fred's Theory of Plastic Bag Disintegration" by hanging a plastic bag outside on our clothes line, while keeping another inside on our counter. Guess what? Checking on the bags today, it is obvious that the one outside is still there! In fact it appears to be fine & dandy, indistinguishable from the control, except that it is a lot wetter. Surprise, surprise, surprise!
anthony December 3, 2012 at 02:03 am
richard ..still can't find wasteless in any dictionary. Is that one you found at the bottom of a tumbler?

Leah, do you have the authorization from Disney for the use of the copyrighted Dumbo character youRead More use for your blog? I thought that the policy of Patch was to deny access to non-authorized materials such as this.
