Businesses will be able to lease an entire strand of fiber for their needs. Lit San Leandro will also provide businesses increased protection from power outages by allowing them to relocate network systems to a data center with greater back up capacity.

"A fiber network is going to determine, economically, who succeeds and who doesn't,” explained Dr. Patrick Kennedy who is funding the construction of the loop at a cost of approximately $3 million and is providing 10 percent of the fiber capacity to the City in return for use of the existing City-owned underground conduits.

“The loop will be able to serve companies that require access to huge amounts of bandwidth, such as medical firms, online gaming and media companies, and data centers,” he said.

About 75 business and civic leaders to launch the marketing effort behind Lit San Leandro, which could spur a high-tech renaissance for the city.
