City Hosts Free Document Shredding, Electronics Recycling Event

The event is open to all residents of San Leandro and will be held on March 29 between 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Submitted by City of San Leandro—

The City of San Leandro announced that it will be hosting its first-ever document shredding and technology trash recycling event on Saturday, March 29, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Public Works Service Center, located at 14200 Chapman Road.  This free event hosted by the City's Recycling Program is open to San Leandro residents only.

This free event is just one part of the City's broader efforts to encourage recycling, while also ensuring the protection of residents' identities and privacy.  According to the Federal Trade Commission, identity theft strikes more than 10 million Americans per year.  Shredding sensitive documents with account numbers, social security numbers and birth dates provides a good way of preventing oneself from becoming a victim of identity theft.  Community residents interested in participating are asked to ensure any paper documents brought to the event are free of binder clips, plastic report covers, and binders; however, small paperclips and staples do not present any issues.  Envelopes and manila file folders also will be accepted.  Service will be on a first come, first served basis and limited to the capacity of two commercial-sized shredding trucks. Participants will be limited to four record boxes (12"x10"x15"), or equivalent.  All documents will be securely shredded onsite and recycled.

Community residents also may bring household batteries and electronic media, such as floppy disks, CDs, DVDs, audio and video tapes, CD cases and toner cartridges for recycling.  Such techno-trash should be kept separate from documents to be shredded.  E-waste including computers, monitors, printers, and televisions will not be accepted at this event.
