City Council Candidate Campaigns By Music Video

Justin Hutchison is no Justin Bieber but his YouTube video is a novel tactic in his race for San Leandro's 4th district city council seat.

Justin Hutchison is not going to be confused with the Justin who sends teens and tweens into a swoon.

But then the San Leandro native has aimed his campaign music video at an older demographic in his effort to win the city council's 4th district seat.

Hutchison, a security manager for Target stores, has put his campaign message into a hip-hopish YouTube video.

The lyrics in the four-minute clip are sung by Mike DeLima, who has been a friend of the candidate since they attended Arroyo High School.

DeLima has other music videos to his credit.

They include a parody of the Katy Perry tune "California Girls" that extols the virtues of San Lorenzo.

DeLima has another video that pokes fun at the police department in Walnut Creek, where he runs a night club that has made some waves with local authorities

"Justin wanted to do a campaign video that was funny and serious at the same time," said DeLima, who said the production -- titled Hutch 2012 -- was a collaborative effort that included local artists Joel Cecil and Cesar Delly.

Hutchison is running against three other candidates for a council seat that has no incumbent. The other challengers are Benny Lee, Chris Crow and Darlene Daevu.

Good Call we should have a video battle!
Summer Hemphill October 30, 2012 at 08:38 PM
The video is as laughable as your campaign ! Stick to something you're proficient at like apprehending & roughing up shoplifters ! Target called, there's a clean-up in Aisle 5 & they can't find where you left the mop ! Shouldn't you be at Guido's sobering up all your supporters (Fred Eiger) for election day ? Why am I not surprised that his friend owns a bar & has trouble with the local police,as one would have to be drunk or of dubious moral character to vote for Justin Hutchinson !!!

Awesome Video and great job by Hutch and crew. People don't realize how much time and effort it takes to write a song, coordinate and act an actual video out. It takes a lot of takes and time and video editing to make everything match perfectly. Marga Lacabe is off on saying what Justin and team did is the same as Sara, I give Sara props for her song, but it's not a music video. Justin's song sang by Matt DeLima hits a lot of issues while at the same time having people act in the video and show the great support Justin brings with him. It took people from various backgrounds to produce. Awesome Job and look forward to Hutch holding that seat. God bless

I do agree with Marga about Justin's Video being AWESOME! Great Job Hutch and Crew!

Justin is no tramp.
Marga Lacabe October 31, 2012 at 08:06 PM
Justice has been a welcome addition to this very stressful campaign (for me at least). He's added a touch of levity, without turning as nasty as Sara Mestas. That's why I can't help responding to him, it amuses me and thus it relaxes me :-)
Marga Lacabe October 31, 2012 at 08:16 PM
I meant Justin :-)
ricardo October 31, 2012 at 10:55 PM
Looks like Summer Hemphill is probably one of the people shop lifting and causing spills at Target which is why he's so upset and angry. Way to act like a grown up Summer with your High School bullying technique. Very Classy. I take it you feel your above cleaning up and make so much money you pay people to do what you consider grunt work. Grow up and most importantly go make some real friends, posting on message boards doesn't make the people responding to your rude and childish comments your friends. If the campaign is so laughable, why don't you actually try and run and let's see how amazing your campaign would be. HUTCH IS CLUTCH! God Bless
Marga Lacabe October 31, 2012 at 11:31 PM
Come on, Ricardo! If Justin dishes it out, then he has to take it. And Justin did call the police on a customer because she was trying to pay with a cashier's check, and he didn't know what those were (so, of course, it had to be a forgery). The result? The city had to pay a settlement to the victim. Not even in the Council and Justin is costing the city money.
Justin H. November 01, 2012 at 12:13 AM
Ricardo, dont waste your time responding to sad people like Marga and Summer. Summer is fake name aka loser who doesnt have the guts to reveal her true identity and has no life so she trolls patch sites through the bay area. Why we live the dream, she hides behind a vail of smoke. and Marga is scared I just may win or at least take enough votes away from Crow so she has gone on the attack against me. Having class is not a trait they possess. Lets have the voters decide this one:-)
ricardo November 01, 2012 at 12:22 AM
Agree with you 100%, just like to stand up when I see grown ups acting like they are still in high school and bad mouthing great people. The truth always comes out and the fact Summer is not real goes to show how much credibility that person has. G.I.G. God Is Great!
Justin H. November 01, 2012 at 12:23 AM
why were livin the dream goin on nice vacations, enjoying our lifelong friendships, raising our families together these guys are livin their lives as patch trolls and lower readership bloggers. They are insignificant in every way. Marga is an atheist and I love Jesus! He walks with me! so yes compa! God is Great! Jeremiah 29:11!
Marga Lacabe November 01, 2012 at 12:40 AM
Yep, this is the type of levity I'm talking about. And while insult-comedy is not my thing, I can appreciate the effort.
ricardo November 01, 2012 at 01:40 AM
Marga, still waiting for the police report and details on your claim? In addition, please explain why the city is paying for something that happened at a commercial business? Until I receive those details, I will continue to understand Summer and yourself are all talk, best of luck. God Bless
Marga Lacabe November 01, 2012 at 02:05 AM
What do you mean "still waiting"? Did you ask for the information before? In any case, you can get all the court documents in the case by going to DomainWeb and looking it up. The case number is RG07348976. Have fun reading the documents. The city ended up paying because after the police came, they detained and handcuffed the victim relying solely on Justin's (and his colleague's) allegation that she had tried to pay with a fake check.
Fred Eiger November 01, 2012 at 02:16 AM
Sounds like an ambulance chasers dream case.
ricardo November 01, 2012 at 03:01 AM
Marga, how is that Justin's fault? Next time when I write something, don't just pick and choose what you want to read, I requested the information in a reply previously. If the police officer decided to handcuff and detain the suspect, that's on the police officer. If you and I are walking down the street and I call the cops and say you hit me, if the officer decides to handcuff and detain you that's on the officer. Regardless that's one situation and for that situation Justin shouldn't be considered a candidate to help San Leandro. Find some real problems, oh wait you can't there are none with Justin, he's an honest up front person with a great heart. HUTCH IS CLUTCH! Didn't you claim to be a lawyer, but yet never passed the bar, lack of integrity if that rumor is true, I hope it's not. Can you please answer why and how that rumor got started?
Justin H. November 01, 2012 at 03:38 AM
I would like to go on record as saying I have a letter from my attorney stating we followed all policies and procedures. Nice try Marga:-) Nice mud slinging though.... Unlike my opponent Mr. Crow who had a warrant for committing a crime or being fired from a planning commission, I am legit!! son!!! Now put that in Chris's pipe and smoke it:-)
ricardo November 01, 2012 at 03:42 AM
G.I.G. God Is Great!
Marga Lacabe November 01, 2012 at 03:46 AM
Let's take your example. We're walking down the street and you call the cops falsely stating that I hit you. Key word is "falsely". Aren't you to blame? Sure, the police are at fault for having believed you without corroborating evidence - and that's why the City paid - but it's also your fault for making a false report. I've been taking Justin in jest so far, just I took Sara Mestas, because, really, how else can you take him? He has no knowledge or experience about/in any level of government, he has at most a tenuous understanding of the issues facing this city, he has shown no proclivity to learn about them or to come up with concrete proposals on how to improve the city. He is taking his candidacy as a joke. Indeed, he's taking the City Council as a joke - I'm just choosing to be "in it". And btw, can you point me to where you previously requested the information? As your other question, I am an international human rights lawyer. What I'm not is an attorney (someone who represents clients). As I don't practice domestic law, there is no reason for me to go through the effort and expense of belonging to the California Bar. My work mostly consists on advising local organizations in developing countries on how to use international human rights law in their own jurisdictions. The rumor started because I've made quite a few political enemies (Shelia Young/Tony Santos/Steven Tavares among them) and they couldn't find anything better to attack me with.
Marga Lacabe November 01, 2012 at 04:02 AM
Justin, you hire an attorney to say that you didn't do anything wrong. Really. And what exactly have I said or suggested that is not factually correct? Did you not stop a customer because she tried to pay with a cashier's check? Did you not state that you didn't know what a cashier's check is? Did you make reasonable efforts to find out before you called the police? As for Chris, he got a ticket for a traffic violation that he forgot to pay. The court issued a warrant, he went to court and got it dismissed. Why, exactly, is that a big deal? Chris was removed from the Planning Commission because he'd been appointed by Ursula Reed and she got mad that Chris was exploring the possibility of running for City Council against her. That's the kind of petty behavior I, for one, do not want to see on a Council member. But you know all of this, don't you? Just like Sara Mesta's role in the Mayoral election was to smear Cassidy and try to siphon votes away from him and into Santos, you are doing the same for Benny Lee. What I don't know is whether you are doing this intentionally, or are just a tool of the Santos/Lee clan.
Justin H. November 01, 2012 at 04:18 AM
No the attorney who represented us stated I did nothing wrong and acted in accordance with alll policy and procedure. I am not sure what happened on the cities end. sounds to me like an ambulance chaser lawsuit which was probably settled to mitigate court costs. 11357 of the health and safety code is not a traffic violation. it is possession of marijuana under an ounce.
Marga Lacabe November 01, 2012 at 04:54 AM
OK, it's an infraction /like/ a traffic ticket. But the point is that he plead no guilty and it was dismissed - which to me says it shouldn't have been given in the first place. And given that your best friend is probably the biggest advocate of marijuana in town - when I met him he even had a marijuana-leaf hat and jacket - and that you have not denied having smoked marijuana yourself, don't you think you are being a bit hypocritical? And again, the job of your attorney is to say you did nothing wrong.
Marga Lacabe November 01, 2012 at 04:55 AM
Justin, why have you made your /campaign/ video private? Isn't the point of the video for people to see it?
cavin morhead November 01, 2012 at 08:02 AM
that was my question here...why is video private, and unable to be found in any other medium ??
Justin H. November 01, 2012 at 12:39 PM
The video needed to have something edited out and will be back available this afternoon via search : San leandro hutch. I will attach the link in the comments section when it's back up.
Marga Lacabe November 01, 2012 at 03:45 PM
So are you going to make us play the game of "what did Justin need to remove"? My guess? The extra "n" your friends added when pronouncing your last name (Hutchinson instead of Hutchison). But maybe Guido's got jealous that you were giving Shelly's a plug and you're editing them out :-)
anthony November 01, 2012 at 06:06 PM
Chris Crow was removed from the Planning Commission by a unanimous vote of the City Council, including the Mayor. All ayes not a single no; that is not petty politics.
Marga Lacabe November 01, 2012 at 08:50 PM
Your comment, anthony, is petty politics. You know, surely, that the Council has a policy of allowing each City Council member to have full authority on who represents their district in the Commissions. In other words, they will always vote unanimously to appoint or remove anyone the Council Member from that district asks. Mayor Cassidy and other Councl Members said that *explicitly* before the vote to remove Chris, and they repeated the same thing again before unanimously voting to approve Michael Gregory's appointee to the Planning Commission, despite the fact that community members objected that he worked for a company that was engaged in property development in San Leandro. So knowing this, why do bring it up pretending that it's somehow meaningful?
