San Leandro Eyes Castro Valley, New Haven On Parcel Tax

As the San Leandro Unified School District considers whether to seek an increase here, two nearby communities have differed in their willingness to boost local taxes for education.

Parcel taxes require a two-thirds margin to win so those results were enouraged officials there to proceed.

But on Monday night the Castro Valley Unified School District after poll results suggested that public support in that community fell considerably short of the two-thirds margin required.

San Leandro Unified trustee Mike Katz-Lacabe said board members will have to wait for local poll results before they know whether voters here are closer in sentiment to New Haven or Castro Valley.

School District Superintendent Cindy Cathey told the board that San Leandro has the lowest per-pupil funding total of any of the 18 school districts in Alameda County according to the most recent state Department of Education data.
