San Leandro police set up a sobriety checkpoint at East 14th and 148th Streets Friday night, but bad weather lessened the effectiveness of the exercise compared to last year's drill.
During the four hours the checkpoint was in effect, police say:
- 490 vehicles were screened
- 2 field sobriety tests were administered
- 5 citations were issued
After the checkpoint was taken down at midnight, officers were assigned to roving patrols focused on DUI enforcement. These "saturation patrols" yielded:
- 1 DUI arrest
- 12 enforcement stops
- 2 citations
- 1 miscellaneous arrest
During a similar, four-hour exercise in December 2011, far more cars passed through the checkpoint, and more citations were issued, but there was, this year, only one DUI arrest.
