Anonymous 'Campaign' Sign Calls Hayashi 'Thief'

The East Bay politico is running for supervisor despite her shoplifting scandal.

Assemblywoman Mary Hayashi pleaded no contest earlier this year to shoplifting luxury goods from Neiman Marcus. She accepted probation without technically admitting guilt.

Now she is running for supervisor in the Second District to fill a seat left vacant by the resignation of Nadia Lockyer.

Blogger and Democratic party activist Marga Lacabe thinks her prinicpal opponent, Richard Valle, is letting Hayashi off easy by not explicitly raising the shoplifting issue.

But someone did just that this week with a hand-painted sign propped up in front of the Castro Valley Safeway.

The sign says it all. What do you think?

For Hayashi, her criminal conviction is a minor event that she is trying to make the voters ignore. Especially those in Union City and Newark who are not so familiar with her past and this entire criminal episode. Most voters in her assembly district wanted her to resign from office after her conviction for shoplifting and being placed on 2.5 years probation. But Mary went underground and never appeared anywhere in public where any cirtizens or reporters could ask her anything about her crime. She relied on the more gullible public to buy into her story about a brain tumor being the cause of her criminal behavior. She fully believed the public would forget about her crime and her unbelieveable excuse about the brain tumor. Then, on July 21st, she had a "coming out of hiding" interview with the Oakland Tribune wherein she changed her entire story and excuse. No more brain tumor as a cause, instead she dodged all those questions and told the reporter the following, straight from the article. "Hayashi said she had been distracted by a phone call when she left with the unpaid items. "Of course, I intended to pay for them," she said. " So there you have it, no more brain tumor, just a minor distraction on her cell phone. I mean, folks, we all walk out of stores with $2,450 worth of goods, right? Happens all the time to most of us. Vote to put a criminal, on 2.5 years probation, into the office of Supervisor. Really?

Dan, the sad truth is that this disgrace of an elected official will probably run and be elected to some post or other sometime in the future. She's counting on political amnesia and the pervasive voter apathy in the area to help her continue her absolutely useless career in public service. The amazing thing is that she's married to a judge! What kind of people are we placing in that position?
