A 19-year-old San Leandro man was fatally shot at an elementary school campus Wednesday night in what authorities say may have stemmed from a dice game for money.
Deputies responded to a report of shots fired at Hillside Elementary School at 15980 Marcella St. at about 8:45 p.m., sheriff's Sgt. J.D. Nelson said.
Arriving officers located the victim — identified by media outlets as Trevion Foster — suffering from a gunshot wound.
The victim was transported to Eden Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, Nelson said.
According to a KTVU 8 a.m. broadcast, Foster lived in the neighborhood and was attending Laney College. He was an athlete who once played on the San Lorenzo High School football team.
Foster is believed to have been shot in the back while playing dice for money, KTVU reported.
Hillside Elementary is shut down for the day and the area taped off as deputies search the grounds for clues.
This is the first homicide that the Alameda County Sheriff's Office has investigated this year.
