UPDATE: Space Heater at Fault in Midnight House Fire

A woman suffered minor injuries in the one-alarm fire on Warden Ave. Thursday.

A woman suffered minor injuries early Thursday morning after an unattended space heater ignited a powerful blaze that engulfed her home.

Alameda County firefighters were dispatched to a single-story house at 754 Warden Ave. at about 12:30 a.m., fire spokesperson Aisha Knowles said.

Six crews of firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and flames billowing from the home's garage, front living room and rear bedrooms. The fire had knocked down live power lines in front of the residence.

The one-alarm blaze was extinguished within 10 minutes, and one woman was taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation, Knowles said.

The woman, the only occupant of the home, was able to escape the residence before firefighters arrived when the smoke alarm was activated.

After a seven-hour investigation, fire officials said they determined the fire was caused by an unattended space heater in the kitchen. The entire 1,000 square foot home was destroyed.

None of the neighboring residences were harmed in the blaze.

"The quick action of firefighters limited the fire to residence of origin and it did not spread," Knowles said.

According to the United States Fire Administration, portable heating units cause an estimated 4,200 fires in U.S. homes each year.

Knowles said the department encourages all residents to make sure their smoke alarms are working properly.

"Working smoke alarms never sleep and as demonstrated in this situation, can help notify residents to escape a potentially deadly home fire," she said  in a press release.

Calls to PG&E regarding the fire's impact on power to the area were not returned by press time.
