UPDATE: Woman Rescued After Car Plunges Into Bay

Police say it appeared to be a suicide attempt.

A 58-year-old woman was rescued by a San Leandro Police officer near the Friday morning, police said, after she intentionally drove her car into the water to try to kill herself.

Her name was not released.

The received several emergency calls around 8:45 a.m. Friday reporting that a Toyota Scion had plunged into the Bay near restaurant, according to police spokesperson Lt. Jeff Tudor.

Responding officers could see that a woman was in the driver's seat of the car, which was submerged up to the steering wheel, Tudor said. 

Officer Louie Guillen took off his police belt and connected himself with a K-9 leash to two other officers on shore for safety then headed into the water, Tudor said. The woman got herself out through the open driver's side window, and the officers helped her to shore, according to police.

Rescue divers from the  also responded and checked the car to make sure no one else was trapped inside. The Coast Guard was also present. 

The woman was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, Tudor said. Details of how the car got into the water are under investigation.

The car was towed out of the water.
