San Leandro Woman Crashes Car into Gift Shop, Alcohol Not Suspected as Factor

By Bay City News

A woman accidentally crashed her car into a gift store in Castro Valley on Monday evening, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The 60-year-old San Leandro woman was driving a 2000 Honda Civic through the Castro Village Shopping Center when she attempted to park in front of Merle's Hallmark Shop at 3340 Village Drive at about 6:10 p.m., CHP officials said.

She slowed down her car as she drove over a speed bump, then accelerated into the parking spot and was unable to slow down the vehicle, according to the CHP. Her car crashed into the business, where she struck a wooden patio overhang pole, planter pot, brick half-wall and glass window, CHP officials said.

The woman was treated at the scene for minor injuries. No one else was injured, according to the CHP. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash, the cause of which remains under investigation, CHP officials said.
