Woman Carjacked, Roommate Shot While Coming to Help

The man was shot in the leg and is recovering in a local hospital.

A man was shot on Thursday night while trying to help his roommate who was being carjacked in her driveway, the reported. The man was shot in the lower leg and taken to the hospital, according to police.

Alameda County Sheriff’s deputies located the carjacked vehicle two hours later and took three suspects in the car into custody, according to San Leandro Police.

The carjacking occurred around 9:15 p.m. on the 700 block of Donovan Drive. The victim was parking her car in her driveway when she was confronted by three suspects, one with an assault rifle, according to police. The suspects took the victim’s purse and her car keys.

The woman’s roommate came outside the residence after she screamed for help. One of the suspects fired off multiple rounds of the assault rifle, hitting the man once in the lower leg, police reported. The suspects escaped in the stolen vehicle.

Police are withholding the victims' names and the name of the hospital where the injured man was taken due to safety concerns, San Leandro Police Lt. Jeff Tudor said.

Two hours later, Alameda County Sheriff’s deputies located the carjacked vehicle and initiated a high-speed chase on I-880. The car crashed exiting the Hayward A Street off-ramp and its three occupants were taken into custody, according to San Leandro police. The assault rifle was not found.

Detectives are still investigating the incident. The names of the suspects have not been released.
