Why the High Crime Levels of Violence in Oakland but not San Leandro?

Oakland Tribune columnist shares her opinion on why crime seems to be higher in Oakland as oppose to neighboring cities like San Leandro and Alameda.

An Oakland Tribune columnist recently brought up the question: "Do you ever stop to wonder why such insane levels of violence are occurring in Oakland, but not in neighboring San Leandro or Alameda?"

Tammerlin Drummond said she is convinced that the major factor is the different mentality of the people who live in each of these cities.

She feels that residents in these neighboring cities will not stand for such crimes are robbing, shooting and killing that seem to have been accepted as the norm for Oakland.

"They don't have what former Police Chief Anthony Batts once called Oakland's 'high tolerance for violence,'" she writes.
