A 22-year-old San Leandro man was one of two victims shot and killed at an Oakland restaurant early Monday morning.

Adam Williams of San Leandro, and Bill Jenkins, 27, of Oakland were killed when a man opened fire with an assault rifle inside Sweet Jimmie's, a restaurant near Jack London Square. The incident appeared to stem from an attempted robbery.

Two other men who were shot in the incident are still in critical condition, according to Oakland police spokeswoman Cynthia Perkins. Two women were hit by gunfire but their injuries are non-life-threatening and they are no longer receiving treatment, Perkins said.

Perkins said the four suspects in the shooting are still at large.

Williams worked at an after-school program at Peralta Elementary School in Oakland, according to Sean Nassari, whose daughter is a second grade student at the school.

Nassari described Williams as "just a wonderfully sweet young man who was always smiling and ready with a greeting."

He said Williams' death is "a big loss to our family" at the school because Williams attended Peralta when he was a youth, his father worked there as a custodian and his mother still works there as an aide and playground monitor.

Investigators described the suspects in the shooting as four black males in their late teens or early 20s. The suspects were in a four-door, white Dodge Avenger, police said.

Perkins said police have received "a lot of calls" about the shooting but have not yet determined a motive.
