San Leandro Police Unveil New Way For Public To Check On Police Activity

Activity logs updated hourly provide some information about police actions by location in the city. If you see the flashing lights you can check online to see whether police issued warning, tickets or made arrests.

San Leandro Police have unveiled a novel system that allows citizens to see what sort of calls officers have been handling in their neighborhoods.

The new Daily Activity Log is open to anyone with Internet access. It displays the date, time, and general location of where police are responding to calls.

The system, which is automatically updated on an hourly basis, also provides some idea of what action police took to resolve the incident -- for instance issuing a ticket or making an arrest.

San Leandro Police Captain Pete Ballew said this new system puts the city at the cutting edge of giving citizens a way to track what is happening in their neighborhoods.

"There's not a lot of systems like this out there yet but there will be," he said.

Ballew said police department information technology specialist Don Sowar led a roughly two-month effort to put the system on the Internet.

Some types of incidents cannot be disclosed by law, including medical and psychiatric calls, and sex crimes.

Ballew said the department plans to expand The Daily Log and provide more ways for citizens to get quick access to public police records.
