San Leandro Man Charged With Photographer’s Murder

A former Oakland Tribune and East Bay photographer killed Friday night in Oakland died from a stray bullet fired by a San Leandro man, according to media reports.

Anthony Lister, 38, a 10-time felon, was charged with the murder of 54-year-old Lionel Fluker during his arraignment on Tuesday, the Tribune reports.

According to the Tribune, Fluker was fatally wounded at around 10:15 p.m. while driving home along Seminary Avenue near MacArthur Boulevard as Lister and an another man were engaged in a gunfight at a nearby Valero gas station.

Lister, who was struck multiple times during the shootout, fired the shot that claimed Fluker’s life. The veteran Bay Area photographer was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lister managed to flee the scene in a car and was taken to Highland Hospital where he was later arrested, according to the Tribune.

Lister, who also goes by the alias Joe Daniel McNeely, was charged with murder along with various weapons charges. He is being held without bail.

According to the Tribune, Lister’s rap sheet spans 20 years and includes two stints in prison.

The second gunman has not yet been identified. Authorities told the Tribune that the man could also face criminal charges in connection to Fluker’s killing.

Fluker’s only daughter told the Tribune that her father was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“My father (was) an innocent man and he was taken from me far too soon,” Dominique Fluker, 20, said.

Fluker, who worked for more than a decade as a freelance photographer for the Oakland Tribune.

"He was an upbeat person," CVSAN General Manager Roland P. Williams, Jr. told Patch. "He was always laughing. It was infectious."

Fluker, a graduate of Berkeley High School, joined the Tribune as an intern and was later hired as a freelance photographer.

In addition to photography, Fluker had an engineering career and was into bicycling and fitness.

Nick Lammers, director of photography for the Bay Area News Group, which publishes the Oakland Tribune, remembered Fluker as the "happiest, life-affirming man."
