Police Warn of Would-Be Burglars Posing as Water Employees

The attempted burglary happened over the weekend

Three suspects posing as employees of a water company were reported by a resident who found two of the three in the backyard at a residence in the 800 block of Kenyon Avenue on Sunday afternoon.

When confronted, they identified themselves as being with the water company. Police say one of the suspects also walked into the home and the resident inside told the suspect to leave, as did the wary resident in the yard.

According to police, the suspects left the area in a light-colored pick-up truck and were last seen driving toward the I-580. The small truck is described as having tool attachments.

Earlier in Feb., a San Leandro resident was burglarized after police say she allowed a man and a woman posing as city utility workers into her home in the 1000 block of Dutton Ave.

The two incidents are less than two miles apart and both occurred on the weekend.

Police have not yet said if the two are considered to be connected but have issued a warning to residents cautioning them about the utility worker scams.

Lt. Randall Brandt stated, "We have seen a few of these utility worker burglary scams in the past few months. The suspects tend to work in pairs and they try to gain access into the residences by posing as utility workers.  Similar scams have been completed throughout the Bay Area and sometimes the elderly are targeted.  If subjects show up to your residences unannounced and claim they are there for business purposes don't hesitate to report this activity to our dispatch center.  We will continue to work with our community and neighboring agencies to help us identify these suspects."

According to the police, the suspects are described as two white males and one white female— all in their 30s. The woman has a thin build and dark, highlighted hair with light tips. The men are both between 5'8"-6'0" tall.
